Sydney to Gold Coast: A Winning Family Road Trip For Any Age Group
Few coastal drives deliver as much family magic as the Pacific Highway run from Sydney to the Gold Coast – and it continues to be a winner for families with kids at any stage.
The beauty of this route is the never ending coastline and ability to stagger stops and take time out at so many of the amazing coastal towns, fishing villages, surf spots or even head inland for some contrasting detours if that takes your fancy.
For a standard week or so, would recommend spreading over 4-5 days, this journey trades highway fatigue for beach stops, wildlife encounters plus plenty of opportunities for ice cream or fish and chip stops and to catch a few sunrises or sunsets along the way.
If you can time it, would recommend tackling the big stretch first – head off early and bee line it for Coffs Harbour, roughly 5-6 hours north.
As cliched as it sounds, you can’t go wrong with a stop at the giant Big Banana – take on a few waterslides and tick off a frozen chocolate dipped banana.
If you need a longer stop, head to the Coffs Harbour Fish Coop and grab some fresh seafood and head to the calm waters of Diggers Beach.
Definitely make a stop in at Yamba. Also easy to spend 1 or 2 nights here and soak up the coastal charm and liveliness of this beach side town.
This laid-back fishing town has all the retro vibes and old school fishing town options but also plenty of great cool spots for dining.
Main Beach is gentle enough for toddlers and fun with pelican feeding at the local co-op.
Older kids and teens will still love the classic ocean pool or a surf at one of the many great breaks – from Angourie Point ( legendary right-hand point break for more experienced surfers who get the local lineup etiquette ) to Turners Beach ( good all rounder options with fantastic fun rights off the wall, while the southern end offers lefts ), Pippi Beach ( gorgeous 1.5km stretch of exposed sand with multiple peaks – good, reliable choice for shortboarders and longboarders ) and Spooky Beach ( south of Angourie Point, this beach offers a great right-hand reef/beach break).
Although increasingly busy and an all year round hot spot for tourism and international visitors, Byron Bay is hard to go past for a stop over. The Farm is always a good idea – although if you’re in school holidays, think about wedging your stop for an early lunch or morning.
It’s an amazing set up – a real working farm where little ones can cuddle baby animals, take veggie patch tours, and grab fresh baked goods at the Three Blue Ducks.
Beyond the famous lighthouse walk, families will always love the Cape Byron Marine Park or for older kids and teens, head north of the town to the stunning stretch of Belongil Beach where you can book horseriding or hire / ride your own bikes on the flat hard sand stretches. Incredible early morning or as the sun goes down.
Your first stop on your way to Mullumbimby should be Crystal Castle to walk the labyrinth. There are so many fun pockets of this crazy place to explore with the family, it’s honestly worth the stop ( and the photo opps!) – whether your spiritually inclined or not, it’s just gorgeous and fun for all.
The town is full of cute places to eat and if you’re lucky, you may be able to time your stop with a Thursday market day.
The final stretch into the Gold Coast delivers the big theme park payoff — Dreamworld, Sea World, and Movie World are all within easy reach, alongside quieter options like Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.
Sea World particularly is a hit for young and old and can wrap up the day with some fish and chips from the Coop or a meal at the surf club in Main Beach.
Definitely consider finding your vibe and staying outside of the bustle of the Gold Coast centre with kids. So many great spots and a bursting scene of beach vibes and dining options plus plenty of accommodation options to suit groups of any size and budget.
Burleigh Heads: Great vibe and a popular choice for families with seaside dining, boutique stores and The Village Markets.
Nobby Beach: A compact little pocket with some cool cafes located between Mermaid Beach and Miami.
Coolangatta: Located at the southern tip of the coast, it offers a relaxed vibe, iconic surf breaks like Snapper Rocks, and great craft breweries. Also great choice for families – although a bit more of a hike up to the theme parks.
Main Beach: Offers a glamorous lifestyle with designer boutiques, dining options and the yacht-studded Marina Mirage. If you’re splashing out, you can make it easy with a luxe stay at the Sheraton Mirage or go all out with the family vibe and stay at Sea World Resort. Plenty of deals otherwise in the apartment blocks lining the beach and an easy drive to the Theme Parks. Good option to stop at the bakery in Main Beach and stock up for the day of theme parks with rolls, freshly made sandwiches and bakery treats – we always did this ahead of hitting the parks.
Currumbin: Known for the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and calm, protected waters perfect for stand-up paddleboarding and family hangs.
